“Moose” Employee Profile: Lauren Amato

In addition to baking at the Moose, Lauren makes and serves great breakfasts too!

Many of our guests are greeted by the smell of chocolate chip cookies or almond biscotti in the afternoon when Lauren is working the 3-11 pm shift.  Our resident Baker, Lauren Amato, started at the  Hidden Moose last Fall, splitting her time between here and the legendary Polebridge Mercantile in the North Fork – a famous Summer respite for hikers, rafters, tourists and locals.

Lauren grew up in Connecticut and was an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Missoula, working with the Farm-to-School program that works to have locally grown food in school lunch programs.  When her stint with AmeriCorps ended, she started baking at the Polebridge Mercantile in the summer and the Le Petite Outre Bakery in Missoula during the winters.

The Polebridge Mercantile is renowned for its delicious baked goods such as Huckleberry Bear Claws and Sticky Buns as wells as a place to get a cold beer in basically the middle of nowhere.  But don’t take my word for it,  click here to check out their glowing “Yelp” reviews.  (A visit to the Polebridge Mercantile and their sister business, the Northern Lights Saloon, is an off-the-beaten-path, “must-see” & experience for Summer visitors – they’ve even made a documentary about it.)

However, I digress… closer to home Lauren whips up cookies in the afternoon for Hidden Moose Lodge guests and makes fresh muffins, orange chocolate chip oat scones and breakfast bars, for our “to-go” breakfasts, for guests that need to make an early flight or are heading off for a hike before the sun rises.

So whether you see Lauren at the Hidden Moose Lodge or at the Polebridge Mercantile, she’ll have you covered when your sweet tooth needs to be satisfied.

Craven’s Coffee Stars at Breakfast Time

April 22nd, 2013 by kimtaylor

Kari delivers caffeinated bliss to the Hidden Moose Lodge each week.

Kari delivers caffeinated bliss to the Hidden Moose Lodge each week.

A couple of blog posts ago we introduced you to Whitefish Pottery who make our coffee mugs here at the Moose, now we’d like to tell you about the coffee that we pour in those mugs.

For the past few years our guests are greeted to the smell of Craven’s Coffee brewing in our kitchen. Craven’s Coffee is a Spokane, WA based company, dedicated to roasting great coffee that comes from coffee farmers they actually meet and shake hands with. They know the farmers they buy their coffee beans from. Roasted to perfection (at least we think so!) it makes some of the best coffee you’ll want to wake up to.

Launched 20 yrs ago, by Simon Craven Thompson and his wife, Rebecca Templin, Cravens remains a mom-and-pop operation by national standards. “I think Folgers spills as much coffee in a day as we roast in a year,” Thompson joked to the Spokesman Review newspaper. When they started in 1993 there were about 3 local roasters in Spokane, now there are about 20. So, in order to survive, you know the coffee has to be good.

In addition to their wide variety of roasts they offer (68 blends in total), Craven’s has a line of Community Blends where a portion of their sales gets donated to worthy causes in the Northwest. Nice.

The face of Craven’s Coffee here in the Flathead Valley is our sales rep, Kari Donovan, who delivers caffeinated bliss to restaurants, grocery stores, cafes and, of course, to the Hidden Moose Lodge on a weekly basis. Kari has worked for Craven’s for over 9 years and loves her job.

And, we love Craven’s Coffee and so do our guests. You can visit their website at: www.cravenscoffee.com or taste their coffee yourself when you book a room at the Hidden Moose!

Eggs Benedict ala Moose

March 24th, 2013 by kimtaylor

Even the snowghosts at the Whitefish Mtn Resort start to resemble the Easter Bunny this time of year.

Even the snowghosts at the Whitefish Mtn Resort start to resemble the Easter Bunny this time of year.

Can you keep a secret? The Easter Bunny is a personal friend of the Hidden Moose Lodge and his visit is a highlight during his egg hiding route here in Whitefish.  And, to be honest, the Hidden Moose is the reason why he’s packed on a few pounds these past few years.  Here’s why: He LOVES our Eggs Benedict ala Moose and we make it for the Big Bunny and our guests each Easter – it’s one of our culinary Hidden Moose traditions.   Now we usually make his “to go” because, after all, he still has to finish his rounds and we wouldn’t want to disappoint all those kids by waylaying his appointed duties.  But, our guests can enjoy and linger over their Eggs Benedict ala Moose for as long as they like.

The reason why the Easter Bunny loves to stop by the Moose to fuel up is because our Eggs Benedict sauce is made from scratch and painstakingly whipped to perfection.  If you’ve ever tried your hand at making Hollandaise Sauce, you know it’s not easy.  Full disclosure, we’ve had our share of curdled batches – but over the 18+ years we’ve been in business we’ve perfected our Hollandaise making abilities – and that is why our guests, and the Easter Bunny, come back for more.  Add a little fruit on the side and you have a breakfast that will keep you fueled up for skiing, hiking or hiding eggs.

Since the Easter Bunny loves our Eggs Benedict ala Moose, he always manages to find some extra treats for our guests in his delivery basket – so don’t be surprised if there’s a treat or two for you when you wake up Easter morning – that is… if you’re staying with us.

We do have a few rooms available for the 29th & 30th of March, so give us a call (888) 733-6667 and then save room for Eggs Benedict ala Moose – the Easter Bunny is!

ABC’s The Bachelor films episode at the Hidden Moose Lodge

February 18th, 2013 by kimtaylor

The Bachelor came to Whitefish last Fall and chose to film the infamous two-on-one date at the Hidden Moose Lodge!

The exterior of Lodge was filmed in both the arrival and departure scenes (when the unfortunate dismissed date was sent packing).  And the dinner date was shot in our Great Room and on the front porch.  Sean’s & the Girls’  “confessions” were shot in the Big Sky Suite and Glacier Suite.  Producers and camera crews spent hours getting the scene just right – moving furniture and setting up sound and lighting equipment.  Although we were full at the time, our non-Bachelor guests were real troopers as they had to contend with all the goings on, although most will admit that it was not only interesting, but exciting, to watch this popular TV show unfold before our very eyes.

Thank you to the Bachelor and the State of Montana for selecting the Hidden Moose Lodge for this very special episode.
